Meet Kathy Smith, Superannuation Manager at LDB Group
You may know Kathy Smith as LDB’s superannuation superstar, but in this article we peel back Kathy’s many layers to reveal a little more about who she is.
Warning: while we can vouch for Kathy’s impeccable professional advice, follow Kathy’s movie recommendations at your own peril.
1) How did you end up in superannuation?
Fresh out of university, I started in business services in a small accounting practice in Pakenham.
My colleague who prepared the super funds moved interstate and no one else showed any interest so I stepped up, or maybe over, and accepted the challenge. It was a massive learning curve, but (superannuation) interested me more than preparing countless individual tax returns!
2) What do you love about your job?
The people – not only the people at LDB, but the clients.
They are from such a variety of backgrounds and are always willing to share a story or two.
I love being able to help clients achieve their goals and the appreciation received in return.
3) What are your top tips for people to better manage their super?
From experience, the trustees who are active and regularly review their portfolio are the ones who are more likely to achieve their goals.
Trustee education is really important. Not only does this create an understanding of the superannuation system and the goal posts that are put in place, but also the opportunities.
4) What are your hobbies outside of work?
My husband and I own a little slice of paradise in the Yarra Valley.
The maintenance, gardening and improvements keep me occupied, but my horses are my main hobby. They have fallen by the wayside in the past couple of years but I get out on one of them most weekends for a wander up the road.
5) What is your secret vice?
Well, it wouldn’t be a secret anymore, but I will admit that there are certain reality TV shows that I watch – for research purposes only, of course.
6) What’s your favourite book, movie and TV show?
I’m currently listening to the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne (this is after already reading the series twice).
My longtime favorite movie is Ever After: A Cinderella Story. Who couldn’t love Drew Barrymore, Dougray Scott and Anjelica Huston in a love story where the villains get what they deserve? And it has beautiful horses!
On TV, the series This is Us has captured my attention. The characters are all so different. The exploration of each person’s story and the role they play in the family has me impatiently waiting for Wednesday nights.
