Professional insights: A deep dive into SMSFs
What does your role as a Manager at LDB typically entail day-to-day?
My role is broad and dynamic – focussing on managing client relationships and delivering strategic advice. I oversee all SMSF compliance and accounting, from tax returns to auditor liaison, and dedicate time to staff development to ensure a seamless service.
Can you describe your specialist area within accounting/financial services and what makes it unique or particularly challenging?
I specialise in Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs). This niche area is complex because it demands constant attention to meet high, evolving standards of regulatory compliance, given every fund requires an annual independent audit. This rigorous compliance is the core value we provide.
What led you to pursue a career in this specific area of accounting? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked your interest?
After starting in general public practice, I found my interest sparked by the intricacies of SMSF law. I developed a passion for understanding how clients invest and employ strategies to gain financial freedom.
What do you find most rewarding about your job, and what’s a recent achievement or project you’re particularly proud of?
The most rewarding part is building trust with clients, understanding their goals, and helping them achieve them while ensuring compliance. I was recently proud when our team exceeded the ATO’s annual lodgement percentage for our large client portfolio.
How do you stay current with the latest industry trends and regulations in your field?
I stay current by being a member of the SMSF Association for regular updates, supplemented by extra-curricular reading and research from reputable online sources.
A glimpse beyond the numbers
Beyond the office, what are some of your passions or hobbies?
I’m an active person with a keen interest in sports and travel. I enjoy running, hiking, and tennis. I’m also a diehard Hawthorn supporter by family decree – no complaints!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, professional or personal?
It’s a saying I live by: “Nothing is as good or as bad as it seems.” I aim to be consistent, not spectacular. This mindset keeps me grounded in all areas of life.
If you could have a coffee with any historical figure, who would it be and why?
Leonardo Da Vinci. I’d love to appreciate the creative genius of a painter, engineer, and scientist all in one. His ability to master so many disciplines is simply mind-boggling.
What’s your favourite holiday destination you’ve visited, and where’s one place you dream of going next?
My favourite was Italy, particularly Tuscany. The lifestyle, culture, and Italian food were unbeatable. Next, I dream of Mexico or Peru to travel the Inca Trail and learn Spanish.
What’s a book, film, or TV show that has recently resonated with you, and why?
The book ‘The Warren Buffett Way’. It resonated with my passion for investing and taught valuable lessons on self-discipline, due diligence, and keeping things simple.
