Professional insights: Navigating specialised sectors
What does your role as a Manager at LDB typically entail day-to-day?
My role involves managing a diverse client portfolio across various sectors, including builders, technology and game developers, food wholesalers, and high-net-worth family groups. Most days are spent liaising with clients to provide strategic advice on business matters and tax legislation. Working closely with my team, we ensure clients meet all their tax and business compliance obligations, including preparing income tax returns, financial reports, and Business Activity Statements (BAS).
Can you describe your specialist area within accounting/financial services and what makes it unique or particularly challenging?
My most specialised area is the gaming industry, closely followed by construction. The gaming sector is highly varied, covering everything from mobile apps and console games to tabletop and narrative gaming. This provides a wide array of circumstances and interesting problems to solve throughout a developer’s lifecycle. With the introduction of AI, the industry is constantly evolving, ensuring there’s never a dull moment.
What led you to pursue a career in this specific area of accounting? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked your interest?
My expertise in this area grew organically as our team’s client portfolio expanded. Having always had a personal interest in gaming, the specialisation seemed to be a perfect fit. Being able to understand the complex work and economics behind game creation is genuinely rewarding.
What do you find most rewarding about your job, and what’s a recent achievement or project you’re particularly proud of?
I really enjoy building long-term relationships with clients and being a trusted part of their business journey over many years.
How do you stay current with the latest industry trends and regulations in your field?
I have the opportunity to stay current by attending game development conferences, such as GCAP. This allows us to share our knowledge with the industry through presentations and workshops, and in turn, keep our expertise sharp.
A glimpse beyond the numbers:
Beyond the office, what are some of your passions or hobbies?
My main passion is cars. I’ve been interested in them since I was young, and in my opinion, nothing beats the rumble of a V8 engine – it’s a great way to forget about everything else and enjoy the moment. I’m also a big fan of the footy (a proud Collingwood supporter, but please don’t hold that against me!). Finally, my dog, Cooper, keeps me active, along with regular gym sessions.
What’s your favourite holiday destination you’ve visited, and where’s one place you dream of going next?
My favourite destination so far is Hawaii. I loved the beach and the relaxed, easygoing atmosphere where no one was in a rush. It was the perfect place to switch off.
What’s a book, film, or TV show that has recently resonated with you, and why?
I enjoy watching cop / detective shows like The Rookie and the NCIS series. Lately, I’ve been watching the Magnum P.I. reboot. It’s an extension of the Hawaii 5-0 series and allows me to relive the places I visited while on holiday in Hawaii.
